Judgements

So, I'm thinking a lot about judgements today.
And how easy they are to make.
We make judgements all the time, on everything.

People make judgements about me all the time, apparently.
Inaccurate ones at that.
And I'm trying to come to terms with the fact that there are people out there who think that they know me well enough to make a condescending judgement about me.
It's really bothering me and I wish it wouldn't.

And though I am not a woman of few words, I will try to keep this lesson short:
People are going to judge you in such a way that it fits their needs. They need you to fit a certain mold in their own world to better enhance their own self-worth. These kinds of people, well, you shouldn't bother trying to change their minds. These are the kinds of people that you don't need to have in your life. These are not the type of people worth sticking with.

And though it's hard to keep quiet, the best thing to do is to just let it go.

The people that matter the most are the ones that allow you to expand out of their original perceptions of you. They allow themselves to really get to know you, to a point where you're not just a person that exists to fit their purposes. I have plenty of these people in my life, so I'm not going to worry about one person who thinks that I'm somehow below them.

My To Do List

So I have about a million things to get done and very little time to do them.
I shouldn't even be blogging right now, but I thought if I could write out the list, post it for others to see, and post it for myself to see, I would be more apt to do them quickly.
After all, I look at this blog frequently, it makes me happy.
So this entry is pretty much for me.
To tell myself, stop blogging and DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE!

Things to do:
1. Finish your cultural commentary. For tomorrow.
2. Pick 10 Drawings for your midterm assment, and clean them up. For Thursday night.
3. Start/ finish your short story for next Tuesday (March 2nd).
4. Start/finish your paper on 18th Century Children's stories (4 pages). Due March 4th..
5. Start/finish your magazine analysis paper (6 pages) on Shape Magazine. Due March 3rd 17th yayyyyy extension!
6. For the love of God, buy print cartridges! TODAY.
7. Also, invest in some nyquil, because you're getting a cold, and cream for your coffee.
Because right now you're very tired and can't have any coffee. And you're pissed.

Can't wait for Spring break. Gahhhhhhhh

Quote of the Week

The world bursts at the seams with people ready to tell you you're not good enough. On occasion, some may be correct. But do not do their work for them. Seek any job; ask anyone out; pursue any goal. Don't take it personally when they say "no." They may not be smart enough to say "yes."

What I'm Reading

The Wild Things by Dave Eggers.

Maurice Sendak, author of Where the Wild Things Are, asked Eggers to create an adult novelization of his children's story. It's based on the screen play that Eggers also wrote, and I found the novel on sale in Urban Outfitters. I'll be honest, I do often buy the books they have at Urban Outfitters, but I haven't always been too successful with that. However, The Wild Things is quite fantastic so far, and I've read a bunch of other books by Eggers such as You Shall Know Our Velocity and A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius. I tried to start What is the What, but I don't think I was in the right mindset at the time, I'll have to go back.

I'm just getting to the part where Max reaches the island, and so far I am noticing significant differences in Eggers' style. It seems almost simpler, and is definitely more accessible to readers. One critique I had of the film was that I was dying to see a lot more about Max's home life before he ran away, and the book definitely goes into more detail. I love reading and seeing all the thought that Eggers puts into each and every word. And NO, I did NOT buy any fur covered edition. My copy is hardcover and quite tasteful, actually. I would never read a fur-covered book, I don't think, though apparently it is out there, and probably on sale at Urban Outfitters, too.

If you're interested in reading an interview with Eggers about The Wild Things, I found a rather interesting one on Rolling Stone.

I Love "Skins" So Much I Want No One Else To See It...

...but at the same time I want to share it with the world.
Seriously, Skins is the best show ever, amazing music.
Why the hell do they hardly show it in the states?
I first heard about it in England. It takes place in Bristol.
Maybe it's too edgy for the US networks? Either way, I highly recommend that you go on Hulu, or itunes, or streamskins.com (though I have difficulty accessing it in the US), and watch every single episode, series 1-3, and then 4 when it finally comes out.
Here's a link with a bunch of info on the cast, episodes, and of course, the music playlists for each episode.

Here I Go Again, Obsessing Over Anthony Bourdain

So I'm not gonna lie.
I'm one of those people who watches Anthony Bourdain: NoReservations, and at times I find myself speaking out loud, "This guy is freaking amazing." Yes, when I am alone.
Also, I am a "fan" of his show, and him as a person, on facebook, where I found this article.
I find it extremely hilarious how he pretty much hates on everything, but he is sadly right about it all. And the things that he does like, well, I tend to listen to him, because he has good taste.
He was asked about where food trends are headed in the year to come, and he directly commented about this place, Momofuku, in New York (of course), and then I stalked the menu. And it looks so good and I want to go. Because we all know how much I love noodles and fine dining.

I'm obsessed. period the end.

Coffee and Art Supplies

Few things please me more than a delicious latte accompanied by an art supply shopping spree.
But throw in a 1 day only, 40% off coupon to Blick Art Supply and I might as well be soaring through the clouds. Very few things make me feel so satisfied. I bought 55 dollars worth of art supplies, and only had to pay 32! And not only that, but they validated my parking so it was free for the first hour! So I got free parking. In Boston. Never happens.
It was all just a wonderful sequence of events.
I am now caffeinated and ready to get my creative juices flowing! Yay!

Our next assignment for art class is to construct a box 18x24x16, with a lid, out of cardboard and tape. Therefore I had to scrounge around in the recycling room for some people's leftover boxes and such. The security guard walked down just as I was walking out with a huge box and seemed rather confused as to why I was actually removing garbage from the garbage room.
I am so happy I decided to take this drawing class. Everything about it is amusing, even the ridiculous things I have to do, like taking other people's garbage.

Paper Sculptures

After our assignment to go to the Museum and draw a skeleton, we had to switch drawings with someone in our class and make a "sculpture" of their drawing out of paper and tape. It must be the same size as the drawing and have the same number of ribs, verterbrae, etc. And then, once our partner gives us their sculpture of our drawing, we must draw the sculpture. exhausting, no?

This drawing is my attempt at drawing the sculpture that my partner, Hector, made of my original drawing, posted in my last drawing post.

This is the sculpture Hector made resembling my drawing.

This is Hector's original drawing that I had to make a sculpture of.

This is the sculpture! Kinda cool! Took me forever.

Anyway, this assignment has been super frustrating and I still have to finish that drawing, as you can see, and then draw another one of it at a different angle. I'm tired.

Quote of the Week

Just sail, belly up to the clouds, the rocks scraping your back
to breathe in the air will be the only thing that you have.
and your love will be warm nights with pockets of moonlight
spotlighting as you drift, the actor in this play.
as you walk across the stage, take a bow, hear the applause,
and as the curtain falls, just know you did it all
the best that you knew how and you can hear them cheering now.
so let a smile out and show your teeth cause you know you lived it well.

My Day at the Harvard Museum of Natural History

For my drawing class, my homework was go to the Harvard Museum of Natural History and pick a skeleton to draw, rib for rib, vertebrae for vertebrae, everything had to be specific.
I loved this museum! I thought it was really cool to see all of the animals they had, many of which I had never seen before, and certainly not as up close! sure, they were all stuffed orskeletons but it was crazy some of the stuff they had! Not only did they have all this cool stuff, but there were not a lot of people there at all! It was very quiet, a very good environment for drawing. It had all the cool stuff that the New York Museum of Natural History has, but 100 times less tourists.
Also, the lighting in there was just fantastic. I took A LOT of pictures, and I'll show you a bunch here!

The Moropus, a descendent of the horse and rhinoceros.

(PS. this skeleton is 42 feet long.) Could you imagine if this creature was still around to this day. No one would ever want to swim in the ocean, that's for damn sure.

Quote of the Week

Boy, when you're dead, they really do fix you up. I hope to hell when I do die somebody has sense enough to just dump me in the river or something. Anything except sticking me in a goddam cemetery. People coming and putting a bunch of flowers on your stomach on Sunday, and all that crap. Who wants flowers when you're dead? Nobody.
